Does Your Nose Get Bigger As You Age?

Updated: Aug 1

Does your nose get bigger as you age? While your bones stop growing during puberty, your nose which is comprised of bone, cartilage and soft tissue may indeed change shape as you get older. How exactly? For many, the nose gets larger at the tip and begins to droop. At Skin Worthy Toronto, we have several injectable and non surgical treatments that can address and correct the appearance of the aging nose.

How Does Your Nose Get Bigger As You Age?

As we age, our bones recess back into our skull, providing less support for tissues above.

As we lose this bone support, the muscles in nose become affected and can start to pull nose down wards. And finally, because our skin things and becomes less elastic while our cartilage simultaneously thickens and expands, our nasal tip can become larger.  Inflammatory skin concerns such as rosacea can also inflate the nasal tip widening the nose and further making it appear droopy.  Our noses are an area on our face that gets the most sun exposure, making it more susceptible to skin damage, enlarged pores, broken blood vessels, and unwanted pigment.

How Can We Treat An Aging Nose?

Botox - Although the results appear very subtle, we can use toxins like Botox or Nuceiva to reduce and lessen the nasal flare.

This can also help with reducing any pulling down of the tip when smiling, narrowing the tip every so slightly and addressing the bunny lines. Typically this can be achieved with only a few units of tox.

Dermal Filler - Hyaluronic based dermal fillers are the most effective nonsurgical tool in changing the aesthetic of an aging nose. By injecting small amounts of filler, it can help to improve dorsal hump, elevate the bridge, refine and lift the tip and improve the overall profile.

The nose is considered a higher risk area when it comes to complications so it is essential that you seek out a provider that can recognize and address issues, with the safest possible plan. At Skin Worthy we do nose filler over two separate appointments. The first we correct to 70% and then finesse once the filler as settled 2-4 weeks later. Doing so ensures that we do not overload the tissues and reduces unnecessary risk. Follow up is performed same day as well as the next day to ensure there are no adverse reactions.

Am I A Good Candidate For Nose Filler?

Having had previous nose surgeries can increase scarring and may make a non-surgical nose job no longer a viable option. It is not a guaranteed exclusion, however we will ask for previous surgical history and ask for an in person assessment to determine the best course of action.

Previous broken noses can also be more challenging to achieve optimal results due to curvature or lack of structure for the filler to rest on. Again, an in person consultation is your best way to determine the right treatment plan.
